Brief Introduction to Ferro Manganese
Ferro manganese (FeMn) is an alloy of iron and manganese usually containing about 80% manganese. It is mainly used as a deoxidiser and counters bad effects of sulphur in metals. It is made by heating a mixture of the oxides MnO2 and Fe2O3 with carbon in a blast furnace or electric arc furnace type system called a submersible furnace. The oxide undergoes carbothermal reduction in the furnace to produce ferro manganese. FeMn improves hot working properties and impacts properties such as increased strength, hardness toughness and hardenability.
Main Grades of Ferro Manganese
There are several grades of Fe-Mn which are divided into many groups. The three main groups are high carbon Fe-Mn (HC Fe-Mn), medium carbon Fe-Mn (MC Fe-Mn), and low carbon Fe-Mn (LC Fe-Mn). By adding the Mn as MC Fe-Mn or LC Fe-Mn instead of HC Fe-Mn, around 80 % to 93 % less C is added to the steel. Nitrided MC Fe-Mn contains a minimum of 4 % of nitrogen (N2).

Physical Properties
Ferro manganese is a solid block material that is nearly odorless when dry and often has a silvery metallic surface. During storage, the surface is often covered with a black oxide layer. It is generally free of extraneous contaminants such as slag and non-metallic inclusions. It is usually supplied in the form of crushed and screened material. The density of Fe-Mn ranges from 7.3 to 7.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Its bulk density is approximately 4 tons per cubic meter. Depending on the size of the material, the angle of repose varies from 40 to 60 degrees.
Chemical Properties
The chemical name of ferro manganese is FeMn. It has a minimum manganese content of 65% and a maximum manganese content of 95%. The three main categories of this metal alloy commonly used are HC Fe-Mn, MC Fe-Mn and LC Fe-Mn. Iron and manganese are flammable and insoluble in water. Non-reactive under normal conditions of use, storage and transportation. Fe-Mn has a melting range of 1050 degrees Celsius to 1260 degrees Celsius, depending on its chemical specifications.
