Ferroboron is a ferroalloy consisting of iron and boron, typically containing around 15% to 20% boron by weight. It finds various applications across different industries due to its unique properties. Here are some common uses of ferro boron:
Steel Production: One of the primary applications of ferro boron is in steelmaking. It is used as an alloying agent to introduce boron into steel alloys. Boron helps improve the hardenability of steel, allowing it to be hardened and tempered effectively. This enhances the strength, toughness, and wear resistance of the resulting steel products.
Deoxidizer: Ferro boron is also used as a deoxidizing agent in steel production processes. During steelmaking, oxygen and other impurities can react with molten steel, leading to the formation of undesirable oxides. Ferro boron reacts with oxygen to form boron oxide, which is less stable and can be easily removed from the melt, thereby improving the cleanliness and quality of the steel.
Grain Refinement
In certain steel alloys, ferro boron can act as a grain refiner, promoting the formation of fine-grained microstructures. Fine-grained steels exhibit improved mechanical properties, such as higher strength and toughness, making them suitable for applications requiring enhanced performance.
Alloying Element
Boron, when added to steel alloys, imparts specific properties or characteristics to the material. Ferro boron is used in the production of specialty steels for applications such as automotive components, cutting tools, and wear-resistant coatings. Boron-containing steels are known for their excellent hardenability, thermal stability, and resistance to abrasion and wear.
Micronutrient in Agriculture
In agriculture, boron is an essential micronutrient required for plant growth and development. Ferro boron can be used as a source of boron in fertilizers or soil amendments to address boron deficiencies in crops and improve overall plant health and yield.

Compared with other steelmaking additives, the advantages of ferroboron are its small addition amount, significant effect and low price. As a trace additive, the dosage of ferroboron is usually between 0.0005% and 0.0035%, and the effect of ferroboron can be maintained for a long time. Due to its small addition amount, ferroboron has a relatively small impact on the composition and chemical properties of steel, and the improvement of the comprehensive properties of steel is partial rather than overall. This feature can meet the processing needs of specific steel materials, making it applicable to a wider range of applications and is widely used in various fields of the steel industry.
Ferro Boron Alloy Production Process
Raw materials
Raw materials mainly include boron ore, boric acid and boronic anhydride. Other raw materials vary with smelting methods and product quality requirements.
Production Process
Primary Aluminum Thermal Process: This is mainly used to produce low carbon ferroboron, but with high aluminum content.
Electrocarbon thermal method: This is mainly used for the production of low-aluminum ferroboron, but the carbon content is relatively difficult to control.
