Brief Introduction to Ferro Silicon

Ferro silicon is an alloy of iron and silicon with a typical silicon content by weight of 15–90%. It contains a high proportion of iron silicides. Ferro silicon is produced by reduction of silica or sand with coke in the presence of iron. Typical sources of iron are scrap iron or millscale. The usual formulations on the market are ferrosilicons with 15%, 45%, 75%, and 90% silicon. The remainder is iron, with about 2% consisting of other elements like aluminium and calcium.

How is Ferro Silicon Made?

The most popular grade of ferro silicon contains 75 wt% silicon ('FeSi75'), but the amount can range from 15–90 wt% depending on the application. The highest-quality ferro silicon is made in an electric arc furnace by reducing silica with coke in the presence of iron (usually derived steel scrap or iron ore). The ferro silicon usually takes the form of shiny, metallic-grey lumps, but is also available as pre-formed briquettes.

Features of Our Ferro Silicon

Clean and Consistent

Our ferro silicon is one of the cleanest forms of ferro silicon, helping you meet stringent steel composition requirements while simplifying production and reducing energy costs. Thanks to our strong quality management, our ferro silicon is highly consistent in purity and size grading from batch to batch. This means you can eliminate concerns about property changes, unpredictable dissolution times, or variable downstream alloying requirements.

Environmental Friendly

The production of ferro silicon alloys uses carbon to remove oxygen from silicon dioxide, releasing carbon dioxide in the process. The high temperatures our furnaces require also consume a lot of energy. But we are committed to doing everything we can to reduce our CO2 footprint by increasing our use of renewable carbon and switching to renewable energy.

Various Specifications

In addition to offering Ferro Silicon 65, Iron Silicon, we also offer a range of high-quality ferro silicon components to provide the best results for high-performance steel grades. You will easily find the Ferro Silicon you want in this series of products.

Advantages of Ferro Silicon

Deoxidation and Desulfurization
Ferro silicon is commonly used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking processes. It reacts with oxygen in the molten steel to form silicon dioxide (SiO2) and helps remove impurities like oxygen and sulfur from the steel. This results in cleaner and more refined steel with improved mechanical properties.

Grain Refinement
Ferro silicon promotes the formation of fine grains during solidification, which can lead to improved mechanical properties and better surface finish of the steel product.

Increased Strength and Hardness
By adding ferro silicon to steel, its strength and hardness are enhanced, making it more suitable for structural applications that require high strength and wear resistance.

Improved Electrical and Magnetic Properties
Ferro silicon can enhance the electrical and magnetic properties of steel, making it useful for electrical transformers, motors, and other electromagnetic devices.

Heat Resistance
The addition of ferro silicon improves the heat resistance of steel, making it suitable for applications involving high temperatures, such as in furnace parts and heat exchangers.

Corrosion Resistance
Ferro silicon can enhance the corrosion resistance of steel, making it more resistant to rust and environmental degradation, particularly in harsh or corrosive environments.

Cost-effective Alloying Element
Ferro silicon is a relatively inexpensive alloying element, making it an economical choice for enhancing the properties of steel without significantly increasing production costs.

Control of Microstructure
The presence of silicon in ferro silicon allows for better control of the steel's microstructure, resulting in improved mechanical properties and overall performance.

Typical Applications of Ferro Silicon

There are seven types of iron and manganese, as follows:

Deoxidizer

In order to ensure the quality of steel, the molten steel must be deoxidized in the last round of steelmaking. Silicon has a great affinity for oxygen, so ferrosilicon is an ideal deoxidizer. Ferrosilicon reacts not only with oxygen but also with sulfur, so it can remove sulfur from molten steel. Ferrosilicon with a silicon content of 45%-90% is used in the steel industry. Ferrosilicon with a silicon content of 75% is the most widely used in the steel industry.

Alloying Agent

Adding certain amounts of silicon significantly increases the strength, hardness and elasticity of steel. Therefore, ferrosilicon is used as an alloying agent for smelting structural steel (Si 2.81-4.8%), tool steel (Si 0.30-1.8%), spring steel (Si0.40-2.8%), and silicon steel for transformers (Si2.81 - 4.8%). As an alloying agent, ferrosilicon can improve the quality of steel, reduce costs, and effectively save iron.

Inoculant and Nodulizer

Ferrosilicon is used as inoculant and nodulizer in the cast iron industry. Cast iron is cheaper than steel, but its mechanical properties are close to those of steel and it is more impact-resistant than steel. Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in the iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite.

Smelting Magnesium Metal

Ferrosilicon is used in the smelting process of magnesium ingots. Magnesium in CaO.MgO is replaced. Each ton of magnesium metal requires approximately 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon.

Used to Produce Low Aluminum Steel

Compared with ordinary ferro silicon, low aluminum ferro silicon is used in the steel industry to produce low aluminum steel. In the production process of high carbon steel, the use of low aluminum ferrosilicon can prevent nozzle clogging during continuous casting. Reducing the aluminum content will help avoid surface defects, especially those associated with mirror stainless steel. For the production of tire cord, content control is also important, and manufacturers recommend the use of low-aluminum ferrosilicon.

Used for Sorting Iron Ore

Atomized ferrosilicon powder can be used in the mineral processing industry, mainly for the separation of iron ore. Heavy-medium ferro silicon is a specially smelted ferrosilicon alloy with the characteristics of oxidation resistance, high hardness and strong magnetism. Compared with other heavy media such as magnetite, ferro silicon has the advantages of high hardness and high specific gravity. It can be returned for reuse.

Coating of Welding Rod

In arc welding, ferro silicon is used as a coating for welding rods. Atomized ferro silicon powder is generally made of ferro silicon with a silicon content of about 45%, which is processed through a water atomization process. The addition of atomized ferro silicon powder is more conducive to improving the deoxidation of the electrode and reducing oxygen interference during welding. Atomized ferro silicon powder is often used as a welding skin auxiliary material and is generally used as a deoxidizer in welding.
